Deinstitutionalisation and community living - outcomes and costs

The new major report entitled Deinstitutionalisation and community living - outcomes and costs is the result of a European project led by the Tizard Centre at the University of Kent and the London School of Economics. Its aim was to collect existing information on disabled people living in institutions in 28 European countries and identify successful strategies for replacing institutions with community-based services. The report was launched at a conference in Prague on 15 - 16 November 2007.

Independent Living strategy

The Office for Disability Issues (ODI) acts as a champion od disabled people within government and work with all departments to help them better understand and meet the needs ans aspirations od disabled people. The office is working on the Independent Living Strategy.

In July 2006, the Independent Living Review was set up to develop a strategy for independent living. This strategy sets out a five-year plan that seeks to realise the Government's aim that all disabled people (including older disabled people) should be able to live autonomous lives, and to have the same choice, freedom, dignity and control over their lives as non-disabled people. The strategy contributes towards the Government's work to ratify the United Nations Convention on Disability Rights.
